I tried the new Podcasting app today. It doesn’t seem to be that big of a surprise as to how they’re handling podcasts, but It’s a bummer that they still can’t do a proper playlist.
The way that I listen to podcasts is via a smart playlist of all my audio podcasts. I filter them by a play count of less then 1 and so after I listen to an episode, it removes itself from my playlist. Then in iTunes I have another smart playlist of all podcasts with a play count of 1 or more that I delete now and then. It works great, but for some reason I can’t control the order very well. I prefer to listen in the order they were released which it sort of does. But the new app has no sign of playlists at all.

Have you tried using Stitcher Radio instead of iTunes?

yes, but i didn’t like it. iTunes isn’t perfect for my needs, but my playlist workaround does the trick for now.
is that what you use?

You should try downcast. The playlist control is pretty good, you can mark episodes not to be deleted, the episodes can stream or download to your iDevice…lots of control.

I tired the app on my iPad. I see what you are saying about limited functionality but it appears to be pretty solid when it comes to the basic functions. I’ve been using Podcaster on my iPhone but even the latest version is buggy and frustrating to use when a podcast doesn’t fully download.
The one thing I really don’t get about Apple’s app is why did they make the background of the app look like a giant reel to reel tape deck. It’s cute but doesn’t feel very cutting edge.

Drew, Do you use iTunes on your iPhone/iPod? I use Instacast and have enjoyed using it. It automatically delets files after they’ve been played, the file management is much better than having to do everything in iTunes. Occasionally it want’s to stream the next podcast that I may have listened to already. I heard the last update was not that great, they changed the UI and some people have complained about it, so I’ve been reluctant to upgrade/update. Just curious what you use on your mobile device. I heard they were creating a new podcast app, but i didn’t know it was available for download already.

Honestly, I don’t listen to many podcasts anymore. ( I know, blasphemy for a former podcaster). But yes, that’s what I use. I don’t have to worry about synching any devices etc etc..
