When Microsoft announced that Silverlight would be coming to an end in 2021, it gave companies that utilize the video technology less than a decade to gravitate to an alternative. Perhaps the biggest and most prolific user of Silverlight is Netflix, which takes advantage of its “high-quality streaming experience” for Watch Instantly. Today the company announced that in light of Microsoft’s announcement, it will be switching to HTML5 video.

This model is for the iPhone 5 which is a bit taller then the iPhone 4, so know that up front, but if you have the 5, you’re going to want this stand. It’s rock solid and pivots into any angle you might need. The stem screws into the included base, or it screws onto a tripod mount. Perfect.

You can use a standard 11/16″ wrench to tighten the stem to the base, or you can get their Devil Head headphone holder that doubles as a wrench. So clever, and by far the best earbud wrangler I’ve used.

TekTuk

I received a review unit of the TekTuk a couple of weeks ago and immediately tucked it between my mattresses next to my nightstand. This simple idea is just that, simple, but absolutely perfect for storing and charging all my devices that used to clutter my nightstand. I used to watch my iPad in bed and then shove it in a drawer it didn’t fit into so that the dogs wouldn’t step on it and so it could still reach the power cord. Sometimes I’d even slip it under my pillow. Not anymore though, all my gadgets fit nicely inside the TekTuk and I can run my charging cable into it and charge them all right within arm’s reach.

The real beauty is that when I want to take all my gadgets with me, I take the TekTuk out from between my mattresses and zip it closed. It’s now a perfect traveling gadget bag.

Simply brilliant.

They’re running an Indiegogo campaign (similar to kickstarter) for funding to make this project a reality. The suggested retail price will be $59.95, but if you support this project, you can still get one for $40!

When frying fish (or anything, really), it can stink up the house pretty fast. If you want to avoid that lingering smell, all you need is a spoonful of creamy peanut butter. As Howcast explains in the video above (around the 40 second mark), just place the creamy peanut butter in the pan while cooking and it’ll absorb the smell while you cook.

The way that I listen to podcasts is via a smart playlist of all my audio podcasts. I filter them by a play count of less then 1 and so after I listen to an episode, it removes itself from my playlist. Then in iTunes I have another smart playlist of all podcasts with a play count of 1 or more that I delete now and then. It works great, but for some reason I can’t control the order very well. I prefer to listen in the order they were released which it sort of does. But the new app has no sign of playlists at all.

I wanted to like this since the regular Xbox controller sucks as a TV remote, and I really only use the Xbox for watching movies on Netflix lately, but it’s pretty useless. It connected easily, but since it doesn’t stay connected after the phone sleeps, using it to pause a show or switch to another one makes you reconnect to Xbox, and then reconnect to Netflix, which then restarts the service.

And you can’t use the iPhone keyboard to type in the search field. Lame.

Most of the time that second window is playing hulu while I work in the main window and so I shrink the window to just show the video area sort of like a popout, but other times I stretch that window to show a full site. I can’t seem to find a way to control the size and location of that second window. Sometimes it opens in that shrunken hulu scenario, and other times it opens in the full website scenario. It usually opens up in the opposite formate I’m wanting to use.

question:
Can I set a preference somewhere/somehow to control the size and location of a new browser window?
